a darkroom facility studio

Safelight Studio is a local Portland darkroom facility and studio equipped to process and print black and white film. We offer open lab time for short term use or membership affiliation, workshops, private instruction by appointment. We are assembling information for future youth and high school level intensives and other classes forthcoming.

Safelight studio provides workspace, community support, and opportunities to stay connected to other photographers and enthusiasts. If you have a specific direction or type of workshop you are looking for, please contact us.

Contact us to find out about how to access use of the space or participate in one-on-one or small group workshops, request specific support/practice, brush up darkroom processing or printing skills, portfolio or project support, mentoring. Safelight offers instructions to all ages from high school age up. Please write to us with your specific interests or needs to see if we can accommodate those.

Please send the best contact and time to reach you.

A Safelight member will follow up with you in a timely manner via email or phone.

Any darkroom use requires a contract, as well as a safety and use orientation before access is permitted. This ensures  we can provide a clean, safe, and productive workspace for all. We have Bessler and Durst englarers for 35 mm and medium format. Users can process, wash and dry film, and print. We have wall space for viewing, and a space to connect with others.

  2. Is this darkroom up and running? If so, where is it located in Portland?

  3. Hello!

I am interested in getting reacquainted with black and white processing and developing. I haven’t been in a darkroom in 30 years. I do shoot 35 and 120 but would like to be able to have fun in the darkroom again.

I’d also be interested in hearing about workshops you offer.

  4. What is the cost for darkroom use or membership? Do you have an email or phone number for contact. Thanks.
